Lumpini Park, Bangkok's oldest and largest park, is an inner-city haven of tranquility, fresh air and shade - offering city dwellers the perfect connection to nature. Named after the birthplace of the Lord Buddha in Nepal, the park is more than half a million square kilometres big, and the habitat of various flora and fauna.

Historically, it dates back to the 1920s, and was a gift from King Rama VI to the people of Bangkok. Under the royal vision, Lumpini was to be an exhibition centre for Thai crafts and flower displays. Although this original vision was never fulfilled, Lumpini Park has over the years grown into the endearing centre for outdoor leisure activities for Bangkokians, who would convene before and after sunset to enjoy a round of jog, light workout, aerobics and a host of other recreational activities.

Overlooking one of the most picturesque views of the downtown Bangkok skyline, Benjakitti Park covers a rectangular area of 208,000sqms opposite the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. The park forms a narrow swathe of green around the expansive Lake Ratchada, with dedicated bicycle and jogging tracks encircling the whole park.

Set in the middle of the lake is the centrepiece fountain and a stage for light and sound performances during major festivals like New Year's Eve and Loy Krathong. Apart from bicycling, the park offers paddle boats, row boats, a skateboarding ramp and fitness area where you can do various stretches on your own or join one of the aerobics sessions on a voluntary basis.
